Day 264: where i tell myself to build more demos
It’s unclear to me what I should be focusing on right now.
One option is to focus on getting more users by creating demos, a gallery, and opening up the beta.
Another option is to focus on improving the product by fixing bugs, redesigning the editor interface, and making it easier to record.
I’ve been telling myself to do the former while actually spending my time on the latter. The reason is because the latter is much more straightforward: I have an unending list of tiny tweaks and bug fixes and it’s easy to pick them up.
But if I take a step back, I can see that these minor improvements aren’t crucial. Yes, the editing experience could be better. Yes, recording could be easier. But should I be working on that right now?
This is the major challenge of working solo: You have to always focus on the most important thing because there’s no one else to do that work. I’d love to spend a week making the flow creation process much better (had a great idea for how to do that yesterday), but I know that it can wait.
Or can it? If my overall goal is to build a product that anyone can use, regardless of whether they can code or not, then what good would it be to onboard a bunch of people who’d struggle to create their own flows?
I guess the question I need to answer is: Is the product good enough to have others start using it?
The answer feels like yes. Even if most people wouldn’t be able to create their own flows easily, there’d still be a lot of value in letting people run flows that I myself can create and publish.
I imagine the process will go like this:
- Get more users and feedback
- Improve the product
- Get more users and feedback
- Improve the product
- etc.
I’ve already gone through a few iterations of this through the people that I have onboarded, but now it’s time to scale it up a bit.
Focus: Build that gallery!
