Day 199: Behind the Demo

I turned 28 today and will dedicate tomorrow’s post to the friends who made today really special because it’ll also be day 200 of Road to Ramen and it seems like a nice coincidence.

I spent several hours earlier today recording a demo of Browserflow for the use case of remembering things you read by saving them to Roam. Here’s what you don’t see in the video:

  • The takes where I lose my train of thought or go off on some tangent and realize half way in that it makes no sense
  • The take where I run into a bug with how Browserflow records new tabs and take a break to write a fix
  • The take where everything works great except for the very last iteration which fails for some strange reason
  • The take where I accidentally select the snippet with an additional space at the end and end up having two spaces between the snippet and the URL
  • The take where I accidentally paste the original snippet without removing formatting and the difference between that and what I later show with Browserflow is too bothersome
  • The take where I finally get things down perfectly but realize upon playback that the audio is terrible because I was recording outside and the wind is constantly blowing into my microphone
  • The take where I record inside but my housemate started organizing the dishes in the dishwasher halfway through the video so you hear a ton of clinking dishes
  • The take where I take my housemate’s offer to use their room for more quiet but realize it’s too dark
  • The take where I record everything in the dining room with no interruptions but that very last iteration fails again for some reason (still haven’t identified the core issue but I think it’s related to the new debugger info bar I was lamenting a few days back)

And then there’s the take where I didn’t lose my train of thought, there wasn’t too much ambient noise (except for the chimes when my housemate left and entered the house), and the demo worked.

That’s the one you see.
