Day 149: My Little Corner

Finding it really difficult to write today as well.

I initially wrote up a post talking about motivation and why I’ve been working on the things I’ve been working on, but I put it aside because talking about that felt weird given everything that’s going on. I guess this is the downside of making my journal public — since I know that there’s a public element to this and that people read it, it feels a bit strange to focus on the little happenings in my corner of the universe when there’s a significant dialogue and movement occurring. Of course, just because all this is happening doesn’t mean that I have to put everything on hold, but not talking about it makes me feel like I’m somehow saying that it’s not important.

My housemate shared today that they didn’t feel comfortable posting anything publicly right now because posting something unrelated to the current events feels tone-deaf and posting something related seems fraught with the possibility of saying the wrong thing. I feel that in some way as well, and it does feel challenging to try to write or share anything publicly right now.

But I’d like to keep this journal going, so here’s what I’m going to do. Starting tomorrow, I’m going to continue writing normal Road to Ramen stuff, but I’m also going to dedicate time towards learning more about racial injustice. I’ve thought a lot about racism as it pertains to my experience growing up as a Korean-American, but I haven’t spent any meaningful amount of time understanding the experience of black people in America or studying racism in a more rigorous way.

I’ve seen some great resources being shared, and here are a few I’m planning to use as references:

If you feel drawn to donate, many people have recommended the Equal Justice Initiative and Black Lives Matter. If you can, try to find people and companies matching donations because it’ll take your contribution much farther. (e.g. As of this writing, Figma is still providing matches.)
