Day 108: Hacker News Aftermath

Let’s take a look at what being on the front page of HN yesterday did in terms of stats:

Landing page traffic

  • 7,262 visitors

    • I’d guess the actual number of visitors is probably 1.5x (or more) of this number given that many HN readers probably use extensions like uBlock Origin that block reporting to Google Analytics (as do I!)

Installations

Chrome

  • 1,762 installs - 192 uninstalls = 1,570 new users

Firefox

  • 777 downloads

I don’t know how to interpret this graph. What does it mean to have 777 downloads but 253 users? Does that mean a whole bunch of those downloads ended up uninstalling? Or does the daily users metric have a 1-day delay?

I don’t know what’s going on, but I’ll assume that 777 people installed Intention, with some percentage uninstalling it (Unlike Chrome, Firefox doesn’t show me that data).

I’m quite surprised that the ratio of Chrome installs to Firefox installs was only ~2.3:1. I would’ve expect the ratio to be a lot higher (many more Chrome installs vs. Firefox), but I guess HN is also a pretty special crowd.

Conversion

Total visitors: 7,262

Total installs: 2,539

Conversion rate: 35.0%

If we assume the actual number of visitors was 1.5x what GA told me:

  • Visitors: 10,893
  • Conversion rate: 23.3%

Even that seems incredibly high so it’s possible that even more people have GA-blockers enabled?

Reviews

Communication

Includes requests, bug reports, nice messages, etc.

  • 11 emails
  • 41 responses (and counting) to my uninstall form (“Why did you uninstall Intention?”)
  • 49 responses (and counting) to my feedback form

Needless to say, I’m just one homie so I’m a bit swamped dealing with all the inbound communication. If you’ve sent some feedback or emailed me, please don’t hold your breath because it’ll be a while before I’m able to fully sort this out and get back to you.

Okay, back to digging myself out of this mountain of feedback!
