Day 96: Rapid-fire Thoughts

Holy smokes, can’t believe it’s already Friday. When I first moved to this house in Santa Cruz, the first week felt super long but now that I’m used to it, everything is speeding by. Feels like I’m waking up from a hibernation pod because I don’t know what happened this week.

Some rapid-fire thoughts since I haven’t been able to think big-picture / deeply about things this week:

  • I mentioned earlier this week that I wanted to veg out and just read. That actually ended up happening. Three nights ago, I started reading The Dark Forest, book 2 of the Three-Body Problem trilogy, and got sucked in. I stayed up until 5am, only giving up when I couldn’t comprehend words anymore, and then read in bed from 9am to 1pm. Three of my housemates independently texted me asking if I was okay because (1) I had talked about my rash / my body breaking down the day before and (2) I’m usually up and working in the morning. The Dark Forest was incredible, and now I’m working through Death’s End, the last book. Reading is so much fun!

  • I worked all day today on fixing Hide Feed’s leaky bucket, meaning that I added a screen to the onboarding flow to make it clear that there’s a free plan:

One of my best friends told me on the phone today that he found Hide Feed super helpful but uninstalled it because he thought he needed to pay to keep using it. Hoping the flow above fixes this problem for new users.

  • Sometimes it feels like I spend way too much time paying attention to edge cases and getting all the details right. For example, I made sure that the page above has the text changed to reflect that the trial is active if someone goes back to that page (highly unlikely). The perfectionist in me feels justified because this is all code that I’ll likely be reusing in Intention, but sometimes it feels like I’m being too meticulous.

  • My housemate was surprised that I had Hide Feed enabled on Gmail, and it was because he didn’t know you could click the extension icon to show the feed. If I had to guess, I think most people don’t know about the one-click toggle and think that Hide Feed is for hiding your feed all the time. Need to do a better job of communicating that.

  • I’ve been playing host a lot more recently, with things like setting up Monday demos for Show & Tell and organizing Jackbox game nights with my friends. I’m really enjoying bringing people together, and I’d like to do more things like this.

  • My face is becoming drier than an overly microwaved sweet potato (I’ve been eating a lot of the Japanese variety recently — yum!) and despite putting on lip balm periodically, my lips are getting to the point where they’re cracking at the edges. This happens periodically, and it’s no fun when I can barely open my mouth wide enough to eat without having my lips split and bleed.

  • Still eating a ton throughout the day. I’d like to go back to being a normal human being who eats 2 to 3 normal meals instead of 10 mini-meals throughout the day, so I’m contemplating adopting a 12pm - 8pm feeding window, which was something I did for intermittent fasting in college. Doing it now would be more about setting boundaries for when’s an appropriate time to eat.

  • I’m thinking of committing all of next week to marketing and forbidding myself from coding. Realizing that with programming, I’m willing to take the time to learn a new framework or language, but with marketing, I want to starting doing right away. Realizing that it’d be helpful to be more patient with myself and take time to read books and helpful resources to familiarize myself with the general principles and strategies instead of following 9 Marketing Ideas You Need to Try Right Now and throwing darts with a blindfold on.
