Day 499: Goals

Had a deep conversation with Ben, Mai, Tiffany, and Marco about life tonight that made me feel quite grateful to have such great company.

One of the questions that came up was what everyone’s dreams and goals are. When I hear that question, two answers come up for me:

  1. I don’t really have goals, and that feels perfectly okay. I’ve written about this shift before into simply “being” rather than “becoming”, and my life still feels like just one thing after another.
  2. If I had to describe a goal, it would be having the independence to be able to spend my time and attention however I’d like. Instead of having to work on things I don’t care about or spend my attention in ways that aren’t beneficial for the sake of paying the bills, I’d like to be able to spend my time reading books, travel, creating art, building things, going on meditation retreats, and sharing things I’ve learned. One of my motivations for building a sustainable business was so that I could take weeks off to go on meditation retreats and have the flexibility to do random things on any day, and that’s still a compelling factor. At the same time, I feel like I already have this independence (stopped working in the middle of the afternoon to buy groceries and cook dinner for everyone with Tiffany before we had our lovely group conversation) so this doesn’t feel so much as a goal to strive for as it is something I’d like to continue doing.

Life is simply happening and it’s unreal that we get to experience it.
