Day 385: surfing life
spend enough time with me, and eventually you’ll probably hear me talk about how we don’t have free will
i find that this is easily the most controversial belief that i hold (with veganism, people tend to agree in principle but just don’t act on it)
most people react quite strongly when idea of free will is challenged
it seems like people reject the claim that free will doesn’t exist not based on whether it’s true but based on what they think will happen if they accept it as true
won’t all motivation disappear?
maybe, but probably not. your motivations might change, though.
won’t everything be meaningless?
your brain is a meaning generating machine. i wouldn’t worry about it.
won’t that mean i’m not in control?
correct. you never were.
life is not about gaining control over more and more of it — it’s about recognizing that there is nothing to control and surrendering to it
the waves of life stop being problems and become adventures when you learn to surf
