Day 217: Week 32 Plan

Week 31

Three years ago, I left my job at Google and backpacked down Latin American while making videos. On one part of that trip, I went from mainland Honduras to an island called Utila on a boat that people aptly called the “vomit comet” because so many travelers threw up from the thrashing. (I was not spared.) I remember meeting all sorts of people, from other backpackers who had come from all over the world to the local boy who scammed me and left me waiting in the rain. I remember exploring a shipwreck in my scuba diving course. I remember learning to hold my breath for over 4 minutes and feeling amazed. Every moment bursted with novelty, and each day felt like it spanned an entire week.

If you asked me what I did this past week, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. I remember getting wrecked by allergies in the middle of the week, and… that’s about it.

Of course, traveling to someplace new isn’t comparable to living “normal life” where there’s much routine, but when my weeks start blurring together in the way that they have recently, I know that something’s off — it usually means that I’ve stopped paying attention.

It’s reflected in my Road to Ramen posts, which have become variations on things I’ve talked about many times before. I’ve been on autopilot — sort of working on Browserflow but sort of not, sort of into writing but sort of not. Low energy.

I didn’t complete any of the few things I had set out to do this past week, and I don’t have an explanation other than that I simply didn’t.

Week 32

For this upcoming week, I’m going to try something different. No plans. If I feel like working, I’ll work. If I don’t, then I won’t. I’m giving myself a week off from expectations and from feeling like I have to make progress on my projects. Recovery time!
