❌ Migrate personal site to Next.js
- Dropping this for now
Despite not putting that much on my plate this past week, I still had a hard time finishing any of the things I set out to do. Much of this had to do with feeling overwhelmed and spending a ton of my time fielding support requests. The frequent context switching destroys my ability to do deep work, so I’m making two changes to set boundaries to make it easier for me to accomplish the bigger items I care about:
-
Disable Discord notifications from my phone
- Even though I have my phone set on Do Not Disturb 24/7, I would still see Discord messages whenever I swiped down for the Notification Center. This means that I’m letting my attention (and time) be captured by anyone who asks a question, which is not helpful for getting things done.
-
Only check Discord at the end of the day
- Instead of using Discord as a real-time communication platform where I’m chatting with people, I’m going to treat it like email where I open the app, respond to open inquiries, and close it. It’s effectively doing Inbox Zero for Discord. Although having the real-time communication has been helpful at times for helping people work through issues by talking back-and-forth and jumping on video calls, the benefit does not justify the cost of having Discord open during the work day and allowing interruptions. In the future, I may just move the community over to a forum (which has the added benefit of having questions be indexed by Google for anyone searching common questions). The Discord was great when I wanted more feedback and wanted to make it as easy as possible for anyone to talk to me, but now that there are more people asking for help than I can handle and I know what I need to do with the product, using a chat platform (and the expectations around getting responses in real-time) is acting as a disservice.
Week 106 Plans
My primary goal for this week is to spend time planning for the upcoming year. There are some improvements to Browserflow I want to make because there’s a customer doing some amazing stuff with the Browserflow API and I’m excited to help make the integration easier, but overall, it’s more of a “thinking/planning” week than a “doing” week.
