Day 557: Fabricating Urgency

One downside of having a ton of runway is that there isn’t much of a sense of urgency to make money. I’m happy with where I’m at (in fact, I know I’m incredibly blessed to be where I’m at and I’m actively grateful for it), and I’m content with my current lifestyle.

But! I know that long-term, I do want to have a business that’s able to support my lifestyle so it’s prudent to at least try to figure out how to make money in a sustainable way.

Today, I finally got all my paperwork sorted out to go to Korea (went to the Consulate General of Korea with my parents and had some fun revelations which I’ll write about in a future post — anyway, I’m quite thankful to my parents for taking the time to go with me and fill out the forms needed to help me get the quarantine exemption <3). Back at home, I was looking at various flights to Korea and was about to book one for 7/28 when I had an idea:

What if I made my travel to Korea contingent on making progress on Browserflow? More specifically, what if I said that I couldn’t go to Korea until I get one paying customer?

Committing to that makes me feel uneasy because (1) I really want to go to Korea and (2) I don’t know how long it’ll take to get my first customer.

But, hey, I decided that this is going to be the year of fear so I’m going to embrace this. I think this will provide a lot more motivation for actually trying to make Browserflow into a business rather than a passion project, so here it goes:

I can only book a flight to Korea after I get one paying customer.

I have no idea how I’ll feel about this commitment later on (also, I think I’ll commit to this publicly like I did with Browserflow’s launch date so that there’s something at stake), but at the very least, it’ll be interesting. Let’s go! To Korea! Soon! Hopefully!

(There’s a part of me that’s like “yo dk just chill and take your time — what’s the hurry bro”. That’s how I’ve been operating for the past 1.5 years so I figured I’d try something different. Worst case, I find that fabricating urgency is completely unnecessary and remind myself why I usually don’t do stuff like this.)
