Day 474: The Joy of Side Quests

As much as I make fun of myself for spending a bunch of time going on side quests and building things that aren’t directly in the service of building a business, I love that I can do things this way.

Being able to go on these side quests is a major reason why I chose this path of being an indie maker. It’s so incredibly satisfying to be able to take your time building something right and doing it well rather than rush it out just to finish the job.

If my goal were only about making money, it’d make sense to do only the things that would lead to increasing revenue. But that’s not what this is for me. Of course, I want to build a sustainable business, but I also want to be proud of the work that I’m doing. I want to create something beautiful. It’s more of a craftsperson’s mindset where spending an unreasonable amount of time getting a detail just right is worth it simply due to the satisfaction of achieving excellence.

The question is not just “Can I make a living?” but “Can I make a living building things I love?”
