Day 443: environment design

i’m a huge fan of designing my environment to support my goals. when the default action is the right one, you don’t need to rely on willpower so much

things that have made a big difference:

  • being in vegas rather than taiwan → able to focus much better since i’m no longer pulled by my environment to do a million and one social activites
  • placing a big water bottle on my desk → i drink drink drink and then pee pee pee like a hydrohomie
  • keeping my phone and ipad in the living room and not bringing it into my room → no temptation to waste away scrolling before going to bed or after waking up
  • keeping my kindle in bed → i’ve read more in the past few days than i have in the past 6 months!!!
  • setting up my meditation cushion right next to my bed → ez to sit as soon as i get up
  • establishing a workout routine with housemates at 8:30am on M, W, F → i have to get my butt outta bed and work out instead of pushing it off and then not doing it

things that could be better:

  • my workstation is right next to the living room and the kitchen, where everyone socializes, plays games, watches movies, etc. i find it difficult to get into flow because my attention is caught by conversations and things going on around me. i could get a desk and work from my room (and then come out to socialize), but will try to see if i can get by just by using my noise cancelling headphones more
  • i wanna draw + play music more
  • 2 much snacking
